A “Traincation” in Greece

What’s a “traincation”?

It’s a vacation, where you don’t lay off your physical training.

I just got back from Greece, where I spent 4 nights in the great city of Athens and 7 wonderful nights on the idyllic island of Ikaria.

Of course I used the time to disconnect and relax. But movement and training is such an important part of my life, so I looked for opportunities to train almost daily.

When training on holidays, I tend not to work on conditioning. I work on my strength, practice natural movement, and indulge in some good old-fashioned calisthenics. In short, I do stuff I enjoy.

And yes, I also just relax!

I’ve already written about the nature of Ikaria and its people (it’s a location where people are noted for their exceptional longevity), so this post is mostly a short recap of my trip. Highlights for me included attending a traditional “glendi” (a sort of party-celebration) in Athens with a live band and folkdancing, going to a panigiri (festival) in the village of Monodenri, Ikaria, getting in some good hikes on the island, and connecting with some of the locals.

I’ll let the pictures do the talking (click on any to see the full size):

Finally, here’s a short video (under 5 minutes watch time) I did on my hike up to a traditional mountain house. Have a look!

Keeping active when you’re on a trip, is one of the best things you can do. Long plane rides, time-changes and other stressors can take their toll, but getting in some quality movement and exercise every day will make you feel incredible. Just get out and move!
