Paleo
I’m a lover of liver – calf’s liver to be exact, done with bacon and onions. So it should follow that I’d enjoy other organ meats as well, and since they’re prized in ancient cultures and part of the Paleo diet, I figured it was time I learned how to cook other types of these delicacies.

KFC’s Double Down sandwich has disappeared from the Colonel’s menus in Canada, making the country a “Double-Down free zone” – at least for the time being. During its one month run in this country, KFC says it sold more than one million Double Downs, making it the “most successful menu item” in KFC Canada history. The Double Down has 540 calories, 30 grams of fat and 1,740 milligrams of sodium (well above the recommended daily intake).
Last week I had the pleasure of appearing on the CP24 television show “Wylde on Health” with non-other than best-selling author Robb Wolf. In fact Robb’s new book “The Paleo Solution” just made the New York Times bestseller list yesterday! If you haven’t already, I can’t recommend the read highly enough. Wolf has a way of making the scientific enjoyable, and you’ll end up with a thorough understanding of the “original human diet”.

Back on September 11th and 12th of 2010, the StrengthBox gym in Toronto hosted two one-day MovNat clincs in natural movement. Led by MovNat founder Erwan LeCorre, the clinics covered the fundamentals of natural movement training, spending time on both philosophy and actual physical practice.
Just as Erwan LeCorre predicted, I have mixed emotions about returning home. After spending five days at his MovNat Expansion course in West Virginia last week, I’m gratified to take a few rest days, heal my wounds and sleep in my own bed. Nevertheless, there’s another part of me that’s longing to be back at Sumersville Lake, with its unpredictable weather and rough terrain, facing more MovNat combo and course challenges. What an adventure.

One of the most frequent questions I hear is “how long before I can see results”? The answer is usually not so crystal clear — people define results differently, and have far different expectations about what they can achieve. Most people focus on their physical appearance when they talk about success:

At the StrengthBox, the Eat REAL Challenge is well underway and all paleo-eating participants have been busy logging meals, charting progress and anticipating results. For many, part of the experience has involved a switch to higher-quality foods. Grass-fed beef, free-range eggs and organic vegetables are all encouraged over conventional counterparts.
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out over the Easter long weekend to the StrengthBox Open House. It was great to see some good friends, meet some new ones, and get a chance to socialize in the gym over some paleo snacks and organic wine!
Prime rib is truly fit for feasts and special occasions, and the marbling of the better cuts (white sections of fat that run through the meat) doesn’t have to lead to artery-clogging consequences. While beef fat is saturated, good quality grass-fed beef will have a superior balance of fatty acids over traditional beef products. Grass-fed beef is high in CLA – which our bodies use to convert fats to muscle and energy. Factory animals, on the other hand, are fed cereal and grain concentrates (like processed GMO corn) that have a high concentration of omega-6s — something that most of us have too much of in the first place. Since there have been huge changes in animal husbandry since the industrial revolution (over 99% of beef consumed today is produced from grain-fed feedlot cattle, although almost no animals were raised in that way as little as 200 years ago), grass-fed beef is a cornerstone of the paleo diet.
