Natural Movement
“Explore your true nature”. It’s a tag-line that sums up the whole MovNat experience, and the participants at the latest Toronto clinic dove-in to their own MovNat explorations wholeheartedly. The StrengthBox proved to be a great indoor training environment, with its balance beams, climbing platform, logs, precision jump stands and other unique training tools [...]

What’s more fun that a barrel of monkeys? Why an adult jungle-gym to play on, of course! We’re big fans of climbing, an essential MovNat skill, and we’ve played around with everything in the gym from pull-up bars, climbing walls and even a log that hangs from the ceiling, but our new MovNat climbing platform really does take the prize for all-out fun.
What should the goal of an exercise program for seniors be? A study supported by the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute (funded by Fitness Canada) found that seniors engaged in programs like Elderobics for the same reasons the majority of the population does: they want to “feel better mentally and physically” and they want to “control weight or to look better”. I think the goal should be to improve quality of life. Too often, however, older people end up doing chair exercises or bicep curls with soup cans or water bottles – isolation movements that have little or no carry-over benefits to real life.

I met Erwan and Femi at the StrengthBox, an industrial gym in Toronto that specializes in MovNat and natural movement training.

Back on September 11th and 12th of 2010, the StrengthBox gym in Toronto hosted two one-day MovNat clincs in natural movement. Led by MovNat founder Erwan LeCorre, the clinics covered the fundamentals of natural movement training, spending time on both philosophy and actual physical practice.
Just as Erwan LeCorre predicted, I have mixed emotions about returning home. After spending five days at his MovNat Expansion course in West Virginia last week, I’m gratified to take a few rest days, heal my wounds and sleep in my own bed. Nevertheless, there’s another part of me that’s longing to be back at Sumersville Lake, with its unpredictable weather and rough terrain, facing more MovNat combo and course challenges. What an adventure.

Think you can’t practice natural movements in a gym setting? While it’s great to get out in nature, absorb some Vitamin D and get some oxygen, it’s not always possible.
At our industrial gym in Toronto (StrengthBox), this is how we roll (or run, climb, lift, carry, throw, catch, walk, balance, ok – you get the point)! Check it out:
