“Explore your true nature”. It’s a tag-line that sums up the whole MovNat experience, and the participants at the latest Toronto clinic dove-in to their own MovNat explorations wholeheartedly. The StrengthBox proved to be a great indoor training environment, with its balance beams, climbing platform, logs, precision jump stands and other unique training tools [...]

My good friend Femi Doyle-Marhsall, hosts a weekly community radio program called “The Pursuit of Fitness” for CHRY 105.5 FM in Toronto. Last month, Femi took the opportunity to interview MovNat founder Erwan LeCorre to get a bit more perspective on his style of training. I met Erwan and Femi at the StrengthBox, an industrial gym in Toronto that specializes in MovNat and natural movement training.

Back on September 11th and 12th of 2010, the StrengthBox gym in Toronto hosted two one-day MovNat clincs in natural movement. Led by MovNat founder Erwan LeCorre, the clinics covered the fundamentals of natural movement training, spending time on both philosophy and actual physical practice.

Just as Erwan LeCorre predicted, I have mixed emotions about returning home. After spending five days at his MovNat Expansion course in West Virginia last week, I’m gratified to take a few rest days, heal my wounds and sleep in my own bed. Nevertheless, there’s another part of me that’s longing to be back at Sumersville Lake, with its unpredictable weather and rough terrain, facing more MovNat combo and course challenges. What an adventure.

If you’ve been reading this blog, you know by now that I’m a huge fan of natural movement expert Erwan Le Corre. His inspiring YouTube Video “The Workout the World Forgot” and the Men’s Health article “A Wild Workout for the Real World” clearly demonstrate his primal philosophy and love of training in nature.

This weekend, Erwan Le Corre was in town to do two one-day MovNat seminars in Oakville at Total Balance Fitness. Having had the opportunity to train with Erwan in West Virginia this summer, I was anxious to see how he would train and coach in an indoor environment. After all, I had collected enough scratches, scrapes and thorns in West Virginia to completely associate natural movement with nature in the raw. How do you take that experience inside?

When I first heard about MovNat, I pictured myself running barefoot through the jungle, leaping from trees and swinging from vines. After all, MovNat founder Erwan Le Corre looks a bit like a short-haired version of Tarzan in his YouTube videos, as he skillfully moves through some stunning natural backdrops. His approach seemed refreshing and seemed to take the notion of functional fitness one step further. It seemed “right”.

My last few vacations have been characterized by self-imposed demands to make time for some tough workouts. While I enjoy time relaxing at the beach as much as the next person, my need to stay active seems to overrule my agenda. Past attempts to squeeze in workouts involved everything from packing portable resistance bands in my luggage to doing pull-ups on hotel doors. While it’s possible to devise bodyweight routines that you can do in your hotel room, I realized quickly that these workouts just weren’t in the spirit of a vacation. They felt like obligations and certainly nothing like pleasure. Not to mention the fact that it seemed senseless to tote workout equipment along on a holiday!

This Sunday morning I’m surrounded by luxuries normally taken for granted: a dry roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, chairs to sit on, clean clothes, my computer and phone… and naturally my morning espresso. But for most of this past week, I’ve expanded my zone of comfort as I’ve gone without those things (even eschewing shoes and socks at times) as I camped in the woods of West Virginia’s Mountain Lakes region with MovNat founder and trainer Erwan Le Corre, his assistant Jeff Kuhland, and five other trainees on a MovNat Re-Awakening course.
