I’ve had the pleasure of spending last week on the Greek island of Ikaria, located in the eastern Aegean Sea, near Samos. Ikaria is of interest not only due to its natural beauty and the mythical figure Icarus. The island is also remarkable because of the noted longevity of its inhabitants. In fact, one in three Ikarians live to be at least ninety years old!

Many experts on nutrition advise people to cut back or eliminate coffee from their diets. At the same time, reports circulate in magazine articles about coffee’s incredible health benefits. Who or what are we to believe? It seems that the question of health versus harm as it relates to coffee would be best answered by a one-armed nutritional researcher, to avoid the inevitable “on one hand…” answer.

It’s hard to believe that only three or four years ago, I was plagued by pain in my joints and leg muscles. I was in a stage of my life where I couldn’t get past a single day without taking Advil or another pain-relieving drug. It’s almost embarrassing to admit now, but less than four summers ago I was eating Advil almost like it was candy, because every four to five hours the pain would return. Multiple trips to various physicians didn’t shed much light on the problem, tests came up negative and all they could do was to continue to monitor my situation.

Most everyone loves chocolate. Not just for the taste, but for the ‘feel good’ hormones it seems to posses! Unfortunately, most of the chocolate that people eat is not chocolate at all – it’s just candy. Overly sweetened, processed ‘chocolate’ bears little resemblance to the product that the ancient Incas prized so much that they used it as a currency!
