Think you can’t practice natural movements in a gym setting?  While it’s great to get out in nature, absorb some Vitamin D and get some oxygen, it’s not always possible.

At our industrial gym in Toronto (StrengthBox), this is how we roll (or run, climb, lift, carry, throw, catch, walk, balance, ok – you get the point)!  Check it out!

    Great video! I love it!

How do you do a workout like this in regards to things like sets and reps? Like a normal workout of 3 sets of 8-12 or is it different?

    Thanks

It’s a different approach. You can practice individual skills (like work on a muscle-up) one at a time, or try a series (x number of muscle-ups in a row). But if you want a whole workout, the best thing to do is to combine a number of movements together. There are so many ways to build a combo, so it’s hard to define sets and reps.

You can try timed intervals: Take 4 or 5 movements and perform 1 minute intervals of each movement, then rest for 1-2 minutes before repeating (up to 3 or 4 times). Or use the Tabata protocol: for each movement work for 20 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds – performing that 20-10 protocol 8 times (4 minutes) per movement. I like to put about 4 movements together in a Tabata, so that the whole workout is about 16 minutes long.

Another way to build a combo is to make a circuit: do x pullups, x standing jumps, crab-walk for a certain distance, shoulder a sandbag and run, etc. Repeat the course for a fixed time interval, say 15 minutes.

Hey, I’m wondering how to find a place like this local to me?? I’m in Rhode Island. I saw some of this stuff on youtube, and I’m really interested! However, Toronto is a bit of a drive for me! LOL!

  9. Greg says:

Don’t know of any indoor place in Rhode Island, sorry! Suggest you check out some of the training options at movnat.com, and you can get started with your own training anywhere!
